The award is named in honor of Clifford K. Melberger, captain of the 1960 Bucknell University Lambert Cup
football team. Founder and President of Diversified Information Technologies, Inc., based in northeastern
Pennsylvania, Melberger is considered an innovator in the use of imaging systems to service the
information management industry. Founded in 1981, Diversified has become an internationally known
company.
The Trophy
The Melberger Award is a replica of an old-style leather football helmet crafted of anthracite coal and
mounted on a solid coal base. Designer Ed Donohue selected the helmet to represent neither offense or
defense, but the dedication and determination of the Division III athlete.
Ed Donohue carved his niche in sports as head basketball coach from 1968-1983 at King's College in
Wilkes-Barre, PA, where he recorded 201 victories in his 15-year tenure. Since 1983 he has become a
nationally known artist in the sports arena. He has created logo work for the Final Four college
basketball tournament, numerous teams and special individual awards.
The Melberger is crafted from anthracite coal, an ore indigenous to northeast Pennsylvania. The sculptor
of the award is Frank Magdalinski of Anthracite Coal Craft in Plains, PA. Since 1966, Magdalinski has
honed his skills in this medium and today is the only coal carver in the United States.
